Addison is a town in Steuben County, New York. It is located approximately thirty miles west of Elmira and approximately eight miles north of the New York- Pennsylvania state line. The area is considered the Southern Tier region. , the town population was estimated at 2,500.

The area was first settled in 1791 by Samuel Rice. In 1796, the settlement was established as a township along with the formation of Steuben County. It underwent a name change in 1808. Originally Addison was named “Middletown.” Early settlers also considered calling it “Tuscarora” before settling for Middletown. Inside the town is one village. It is also named Addison and is located along the southern town line.

Most of the traffic that flows through Addison comes from New York State Route 119 (Front Street) and New York State Route 417 (Addison Road). Most traffic citations are issued on these roads. NYS-119 enters town from the west and NYS-417 enters from the east. They meet one another and form a road that stretches across the south portion of town. It runs parallel to the Canisteo River, which separates the road from the village. Taking NYS-417 east, will bring you to the passing I-99 interstate, which in turn provides access to the Southern Tier Expressway (I-86). Heading north on I-99 brings you to the interchange of I-86, just north-west of Corning City. County Route 1 (Addison-Burr Hollow Road) and County Route 3 (Goodhue Lake Road) serve the center and north area of town. They head north and south connecting the more rural area to the village.

The Addison Town Court has jurisdiction over the entire town. This includes the village of Addison. The village employs a small police force that conducts traffic stops. They issue tickets answerable to the town court. Outside of the village, road patrol is conducted by the New York State Police or the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office.
