Almond is a town in Allegany County, New York. It is located in the Southern Tier region, approximately twenty-five miles north of the Pennsylvania state line. The closest large city is Rochester approximately seventy miles north. The small city of Hornell is a few miles east of town. Almond has an expansive and beautiful landscape dotted with farms., the total estimated population was 1,500. The town includes a village also named Almond.
Almond is not named after the nut. The almond was not available or growing in the area at the time of the founding of the town in the 1800’s. Rather it was named by early Scottish settlers after a river in Scotland. Locals pronounce the name of the town as “ell-mond”.
