Almond is a town in the eastern part of Allegany County, New York. The town is almost typical of the rural Southern Tier region, with an expansive and beautiful landscape dotted with farms. The total population is less than two thousand. The town includes a village also named Almond.
Almond is not named after the nut, which was not available or growing in the area at the time of the founding of the town in the 1800’s. Rather it was named by early Scottish settlers after a river in Scotland. Locals pronounce the name of the town as “ell-mond”.
