Amity is a town in Allegany County, New York. It is located in the rural Southern Tier region of the state. The closest large city is Buffalo, approximately seventy-five miles northeast of Amity. The small city of Hornell is twenty-five miles east of the town., the town’s estimated population was 2,100. Amity derived its name from the Latin word for “friendship”. The town was settled in 1804. Inside the town is a village named Belmont. It is the main residential area and the Allegany County Seat, where county government offices are located. In addition to the village, there are two hamlets in Amity. They are known as Belvidere and Withey.
