Belfast is a small and rural town in Allegany County, New York. It is located in the Southern Tier region approximately seventy five miles southeast of Buffalo., the town population was estimated at 1,500. The name of the town is derived from the City of Belfast, Ireland, due to the large number of residents with Irish heritage. The town is home to a large Amish community. Belfast is home to the Bare Knuckle Boxing Hall of Fame.

New York State Route 305 and County Route 17 serve the remaining middle and western town area. NYS-305 runs east west and CR-17 runs diagonally heading towards the south. NYS-305 passes through the hamlet of Rockville before leaving town via the western boundary. Both roads terminate as they meet NYS-19. The rest of the town is served by smaller local roads.
There is no town police force. Instead, traffic patrols are conducted by the New York State Police and the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office. Troopers and sheriffs have the authority to stop motorists and issue citations for traffic law violations. The Belfast Town Court adjudicates traffic tickets.
