Butternuts is the name of a town in Otsego County, New York. It is located just west of the small city of Oneonta and approximately fifty miles northeast of the larger city of Binghamton. The town is considered part of the rural Central New York region.
A butternut is a type of walnut, also known as a white walnut. Historians believe the town was named after an oddity in the area of three butternut trees growing from one stump. , the town population was estimated at 1,700.
