Canisteo is the name of a town and village in Steuben County, New York. The village is within the town. Canisteo is a Senecan word, which roughly translates to “board on the water”. It is a rural area of New York State, around 120 miles west of Binghamton and around 100 miles southeast of Buffalo. The area is known as the Southern Tier region. , the town population was approximately 3,250. Most of the population lives within the village. Canisteo is home to the world’s largest “living sign", consisting of pine trees. The trees, when viewed from the air, spell the town’s name. The trees were planted in 1934.

New York State Route 36 (NYS-36) is the busiest road in Canisteo. Route 36 runs north-south along the western side of the town and through the village of Canisteo. It brings motorists from the Pennsylvania state line in the south to its northern terminus at the I-390 in Dansville. The town’s main east-west route is County Route 119 (Canisteo River Road). From the southeast, it brings motorists from the I-99 in the Town of Erwin to the northwestern corner of the town where it terminates in Canisteo village. There is no town police department. The town receives police services from the New York State Police and the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office. Both agencies can conduct traffic stops on town roads.
There are two courts in Canisteo, the Canisteo Town Court and the Canisteo Village Court. The town court has jurisdiction over traffic matters that occur anywhere inside the town, but outside the village. The village court does the opposite, handling matters that occur only inside the village and not in the town. Which court you must answer to depends on where you received your ticket. If you received a ticket inside the village, you must respond to the village court. Any ticket issued outside the village will be adjudicated by the town court. The village court is busier than the town court.
