Caton is a rural farming town in Steuben County, New York. It rests on the Pennsylvania state line in the Southern Tier region of New York State. , the town was home to an estimated 2,000 residents. The closest metropolitan area is the small City of Corning, around seven miles north. Caton was formed in 1839 as the “Town of Wormley”. In 1840, the town changed its name in honor of Richard Caton, an English merchant, who was apparently one of the initial landowners. The town encompasses the hamlets of Caton, West Caton, and Brownstown.

There are three main roads in Caton. They are County Route 32 (Sagetown Road/Marsh Road), County Route 106 (Church Creek Road), and New York State Route 225 (Caton Road/Hendy Hollow Road). NYS-225 enters town from the north and east. The road meets with CR-32 in the principal Hamlet of Caton. From the hamlet, CR-32 runs south, then turns east and continues into the neighboring town of Southport. As it turns east, it intersects with CR-106, which enters town from the west. Before it meets CR-32, it passes through the hamlet of Brownstown. Speeding is a common charge issued on these roads. Most of the tickets are issued to Pennsylvania drivers who are not as unfamiliar with the New York roads and speed limits.
