In New York State, attorneys can often appear in court in the place of their clients. This is especially true for traffic violations. In other words, your ticket in Copake can be dismissed or reduced without you having to appear in court. It is often imperative that you fight your ticket. Disputing your ticket does not mean you have to say anything untruthful. Having your attorney submit a not guilty plea does not mean you are stating you did not commit the alleged violation. It merely means you are utilizing your Constitutional right to require the “People” to prove their case. A good traffic ticket attorney can fight the documentation and proof provided by the prosecutor. This can result in dismissal of charges. A typical result is where the violation with points gets reduced to a violation with no points. This leaves the government happy because there is a nominal fine and leaves the motorist happy because they avoid points.
