Croghan is the name of a town and village in Lewis County, New York. The village is split between the towns of Croghan and New Bremen. Croghan is located on the western foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. The closest metropolitan area is the small City of Watertown, approximately 30 miles west. , the town population was estimated at 3,000 and the village population was estimated at 600. The town covers one hundred and eighty two square miles. Settlement began around 1830. In 1841 the township was formed. In addition to the village, the town encompasses numerous hamlets. They are Beaver Falls, Belfort, Forest City, High Falls, Indian River, Naumburg, North Croghan, Oswegatchie Camp, and Soft Maple.
