Town of Dryden, New York
Dryden is a town in Tompkins County, New York. It is considered part of the Finger Lakes region and is east of Cayuga Lake. The town is just east of the City of Ithaca and is considered its suburb. Dryden is the largest and most populated town in Tompkins County. As of , Dryden’s population was estimated at 13,800. Dryden covers over ninety-four square miles and encompasses two villages along with several hamlets. The villages are Dryden and Freeville. The hamlets are Bethel Grove, Ellis, Etna, Lacy Corners, Red Mills, Varna, and West Dryden. Dryden’s Southworth Library was the location of one of Abraham Lincoln’s speech manuscripts. It had been in the library’s possession since 1926. In 2009 the manuscript was sold for $3.44 million.
Traffic Tickets in the Town of Dryden
New York State Route 13 (Dryden Road) is the town’s busiest road. NYS-13 enters town from the west and northeast. Near the town’s eastern boundary, it passes through the Village of Dryden. The road also passes through several other hamlets on its way through town. Taking NYS-13 north will bring you to Cortlandville. Taking it west will bring you to Cayuga Heights and later, Ithaca City.
NYS-13 is where most of the traffic tickets in Dryden originate. A large volume of them come from inside the village, just past its boundary. Many drivers that enter the village are issued speeding tickets for failing to adjust their speed. The speed limit in Dryden Village is 30 miles per hour. Outside the village, it fluctuates between 55 and 40 miles per hour. Similarly, outside the village of Freeville, the speed limit on Route 38 and Route 105 is reduced as one enters the village. Motorists that are not from the area often do not notice the reduced speed limit.
Other roads in Dryden worth mentioning are New York State Route 78, New York State Route 366 (Main Street), New York State Route 348, County Route 108 (West Dryden Road), County Route 110 (Ellis Hollow Road) and County Route 182 (Hanshaw Road). Tickets issued in Dryden Village can be written by the Dryden Village Police. Those issued outside the village are written by the New York State Police and the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office.
Up until December of 2024, the village of Freeville had its own justice court. With the closure of the court, all Freeville cases have been moved to the Dryden Town Court. Going forward all Freeville charges will be made answerable to the Dryden Town Court.
