Fairport is a village in Monroe County, New York. It is within the town of Perinton. It is the town’s main population area and serves as its “downtown"., the village population was estimated at 5,400. Fairport is located ten miles south-east of the City of Rochester. Fairport is known as the “Crown Jewel of the Erie Canal”. In the 19th century, the village played a critical role on the Erie Canal and was a very busy port with a bustling economy. As the railroad extended further into upstate New York, the canal’s use dropped. The Erie Canal is now mostly used for recreational purposes.
