Floyd, New York
Floyd is the name of a town in Oneida County, New York. It is part of the Central New York region., the town’s population was approximately 3,800. Floyd is found directly east of the City of Rome and approximately twelve miles north-west of Utica. The town includes the hamlets of Camroden, East Floyd, Floyd (also known as Floyd Center), Steuben Valley, and Stittville.
In 1790, the area was first settled and named the new town after William Floyd, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. The town’s initial settlement area is locally known as “The Punch Bowl”, supposedly due to the graphical shape of the area. In the early 18th century, Floyd was one of the most well-to-do towns in Oneida County. It was home to scholars and anti-slavery activists. It now serves mostly as a “bedroom” community for people that work in the cities of Rome and Utica.

A major roadway in Floyd is New York State Route 49 (Revolutionary Trail), which runs parallel with the Erie Canal. The NYS-49 connects the City of Rome with the City of Utica and the Thruway. The speed limit reaches 65 mph on this road. The town’s arterial road, New York State Route 365 (New Floyd Road) sees traffic stops as well. It runs east and west through town. It is one of several roads in Floyd that lead to the neighboring City of Rome. Some other important roads worth mentioning are County Route 47 (Watson Hollow Road), and County Route 74 (Soule Road). These all serve the northern section of Floyd. The remaining town area is made up of smaller local roads.
