Greenwood is a rural town in Steuben County, New York. It is part of New York’s Southern Tier region and is located approximately sixteen miles south of the small city of Hornell. The town makes up forty-one square miles. Greenwood’s first settlers arrived circa 1820. In 1827, the town was officially formed. Its early economy was mostly based on salt production. Four hamlets make up the town. They are Bennetts, Greenwood, and West Greenwood. Another hamlet goes by the name of Rough and Ready. The origin of this name is not clear. “Old Rough and Ready” was the nickname for President Zachary Taylor. , Greenwood's population was approximately 749.
