Hunter is the name of a town in Greene County, New York. It is located in the Catskill Mountains, approximately fifty miles southwest of Albany. Hunter covers ninety square miles., Hunter’s population was estimated at 3,000. There are two villages in the town. They are Hunter and Tannersville. Several hamlets make up the town as well. They are Edgewood, Elka Park, Haines Falls, Lanesville, and Platte Clove.
The area sees a lot of traffic in the summer because it is cooler compared to New York City and has a lot of outdoor activities. It also sees more traffic in the winter season due to its proximity to the Hunter Mountain ski area. Hunter is home to the second highest mountain in the Catskill Mountain Range and has one of the more popular ski resorts in the region.

Both villages sit along the town’s arterial road, New York State Route 23A (NYS-23A). NYS-23A is an east-west bound road that cuts through the town’s northern portion. New York State Route 214 (NYS-214) serves the southwest area of town. It enters town from the south and runs north until it meets NYS-23A, where it terminates. This occurs halfway between both villages.
