Ira is the name of a town in Cayuga County, New York. It is located approximately twenty-five miles northwest of Syracuse and approximately twenty miles south of the Lake Ontario shore. The town encompasses the hamlets of Bethel Corners, Floridaville and Ira. It also contains the northern half of the village of Cato. The southern half of the village is located in the town of Cato., the town population was estimated to be around 2,000.
The origin of the town name is very interesting. The town that is currently Cato used to be much bigger. However, its residents could not get along. The town was split into four separate towns, and were subsequently named Cato, Victory, Conquest, and Ira. The residents of what became Victory and Conquest were happy with the result and this is reflected in the town names. Other residents were “irate” with the result and this is reflected in the name Ira.
