Monroe is a town in Orange County, New York. It is located approximately fifty miles northwest of Midtown Manhattan and is considered a New York City suburb. The town is named after the 5th president of the United States, James Monroe. Also included in the town is the Village of Monroe and a small part of the Village of Harriman. The Village of Kiryas Joel used to be part of the town, but it broke off in 2019 and incorporated as the Town of Palm Tree., the town population was estimated at 22,500.

The combined New York State Route 6 and New York State Route 17 (US-6/NYS-17) pass east-west through Monroe. Many traffic stops are conducted on this highway, mostly for speeding violations.
