Montezuma (locally pronounced Mon-eh-ZOOM-uh) is a town in Cayuga County, New York. The town sits north of Cayuga Lake and is approximately thirty miles west of Syracuse. It is part of the Finger Lakes region. Montezuma is a rural town., the town was home to an estimated 1,100 residents. Most of the town consists of canals, uninhabited marshland, and wildlife preserves. The name Montezuma was the last fully independent ruler of the Aztec empire.
