Orwell is a town in Oswego County, New York. It is part of the Central New York region, around forty miles north of Syracuse. The total land area of Orwell is forty-one square miles. The eastern side of town is mostly forestland. Farms and residential communities are on the western side. The town was established in 1817 and named after Orwell, Vermont. The hamlets in Orwell are Beecherville, Chateaugay, New Scriba, Orwell, Stillwater and Vorea., the town had an estimated population of 1,100. Orwell is one of several towns left in New York State that are considered “dry” towns – where the purchase and consumption of alcohol is forbidden.
