Pine Plains is a town in Dutchess County, New York. It is located on the eastern side of the Hudson River near the Massachusetts and Connecticut borders. The town is approximately 100 miles northeast of New York City and approximately 60 miles southeast of Albany. Pawling is considered part of the Hudson Valley region., the population was approximately 2,200. Pine Plains covers approximately thirty-one square miles. Four hamlets make up the town. They are known as Bethel, Hammertown, Pachin Mills and Pine Plains.
The area was first settled in 1740 and established as a township in 1823. P. T. Barnum, an American businessman who founded the famous Barnum & Bailey Circus, used to keep his animals in Pine Plains during the circus off season, in the winter. He chose the town primarily because there were many nearby railroads that could be used to transport his circus animals. He also wanted the animals away from prying eyes as much as possible.
