Port Byron is a village in Cayuga County, New York. The village covers about one square mile and is within the town of Mentz., the village had a population of around one thousand.
The area of the village is known as the Finger Lakes region. Port Byron is around ten miles north of Owasco Lake, one of the eleven Finger Lakes. The area is also known as the Central New York region as it is located around thirty miles west of Syracuse.
The original name of the village was “Kings Settlement”. In the 1820’s, the village underwent exponential growth due to the expansion of the Erie Canal. A port was established in the village, thus giving rise to the change of the village name. Historians believe the village was renamed after Lord Byron, an English poet.
