Preston is a rural town in Chenango County, New York. Its area is considered part of the Central New York region and Southern Tier region. The town is around forty miles northeast of Binghamton. Preston covers a total area of thirty-five square miles and is home to approximately 1,000 residents (). The town was first settled in 1787. In 1806, Preston was established as a town. The hamlets of Preston and Preston Center make up the town’s main residential areas.

Just west of Preston, CR-10 meets County Route 18 (CR-18). This road runs north and south across the west part of town. In the southwest corner of Preston, New York State Route 220 (NY-220) runs northwest and southeast.
Preston does not have a local police department. That means traffic and safety patrols are conducted by the New York State Police or the Chenango County Sheriff’s Department.
