Reading is a town in Schuyler County, New York. It is part of the Finger Lakes region and sits on the western shore of Seneca Lake. Reading covers twenty-seven square miles., the town had an estimated population of 1,750. Like other towns in this region, Reading’s area is mostly farmland. The town also has several vineyards and wineries. Reading encompasses the hamlets of Gabriel's Junction, Irelandville, North Reading and Reading Center. The town also contains a small portion of the Village of Watkins Glen. The village is found in the southeast corner of Reading.

The town’s main road is New York State Route 14 (NYS-14). It runs north-south along the western bank of Seneca Lake. Taking the road south brings you to the Village of Watkins Glen. Another road that heads south towards Watkins Glen is New York State Route 14A (NYS-14A). It runs through the hamlets of Reading and Reading Center. Around halfway there, after passing Reading Center, the road turns into County Route 28 (CR-28). Running north-south along the western town line is County Route 27 (CR-27). This road meets County Route 23 (CR-23), which enters from the west. Traffic tickets can be issued by state troopers and sheriff deputies. The Reading Town Court (Reading Justice Court) has jurisdiction over the town roads. This excludes those in Watkins Glen.
