The Town of Rockland is located in the northwest portion of Sullivan County, New York. It is within the Catskill Mountains. The town was first settled in 1789, and then later was established in 1910. The town encompasses the hamlets of Anderson, Beaverkill, Craigle Clair, De Bruce, Deckertown, Grooville, Hazel, Joscelyn, Livingston Manor, Lew Beach, Morsston, Parkston, the similarly named Rockland, and Roscoe. The main population area is Livingston Manor. , the Rockland town total population was estimated at 3,200.
Traffic Tickets in the Town of Rockland
A large portion of New York State Route 17 (NYS-17) goes through the town of Rockland. The area is patrolled by Troop “F” of the New York State Police. Numerous speeding tickets are issued on this stretch of highway. On Route 17, the speed limit does not exceed 65 mph. Most citations are for speeding in the 80-90 mph range. Some traffic tickets are issued on Old Route 17/Rockland Road (CR-179/CR-91/NY 206). The speed limit is reduced to 30 mph upon entering the hamlet of Roscoe, but motorists often fail to take notice.
All Rockland traffic violations are adjudicated in the Rockland Town Court (Town of Rockland Justice Court). The court is located in the Hamlet of Roscoe. To make matters somewhat confusing, there is another justice court located in Roscoe, the Colchester Town Court. The two Roscoe courts are in fact a three-minute walk from each other. Rockland Town Court has jurisdiction over the town of Rockland. The Colchester Town Court has jurisdiction over violations in the town of Colchester of Delaware County.
