Seneca, New York

Seneca is a town in Ontario County, New York. It is part of the Finger Lakes region and is roughly forty miles southeast of Rochester., it had an estimated population of 2,600. Seneca covers a total area of fifty square miles and contains several hamlets. The hamlets are Flint, Hall, Seneca Castle and Stanley. Seneca’s historical sites include the Levi Barden Cobblestone Farmhouse, the Thomas Barron House and the Rippey Cobblestone Farmhouse. Up until the middle of the 18th century, the area of the town was forestland. At that time, the area began being settled by poor farmers. In 1793, the settlement obtained its township status and was named after the Native American Seneca tribe. The town remains primarily an agricultural community and includes farms for corn, cabbage, beans, oats and wheat. There are also dairy farms.

Seneca is sandwiched between two cities. To the east is Geneva. To the west is Canandaigua. The town’s main road, US Route 20 (US-20), runs east-west between both. The large volume of traffic leads to many traffic stops. US-20 meets County Route 5 (CR-5) in the middle of town. It is at this point that the speed limit on the US-20 drops from 55 mph to 40 mph. Many speeding tickets are issued in this area. CR-5 is a north and south bound road that runs through the southern part of town. This road provides access to the hamlets of Hall, Seneca and Stanley. In the northern part of town, County Route 20 runs north and south. Its southern terminus is at the intersection where it meets US-20 near the western town line. CR-20 gives motorists access to the hamlet of Seneca Castle.
Traffic patrols throughout Seneca are not conducted by a local police department. They are conducted by the New York State Police or the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office.
