Traffic Tickets in the Town of Southeast
All traffic tickets issued in the town are adjudicated in the Southeast Town Court. This court is one of the busiest courts in New York State. This is mostly due to the two highways that go through the town.
The first is Interstate 84 (I-84). On the eastern side it comes in from Connecticut and proceeds westward until the center of town where it turns to the northwest. The I-84 continues in this direction until it leaves town. The interstate highway is patrolled by Troop K of the New York State Police. They conduct many traffic stops, mostly for speeding. The speed limit on the I-84 in New York does not exceed 65 miles per hour.
The second highway that sees many traffic stops is the I-684/NYS-22. Coming from the south, it enters town in the southwest corner as the I-684. It runs northeast towards the center of town until it crosses the I-84. Once it crosses the I-84, it becomes the NYS-22. It continues northward as it exits the town. When the highway switches from the I-84 to the NYS-22 the lanes narrow and the speed limit is reduced. On the I-684, the speed limit is 65 mph. On the NYS-22, the speed limit is 55 mph. Motorists often fail to adjust their speed properly. Here too, Troop K of the New York State Police issue many traffic citations, mostly for speeding.
The vast majority of Southeast traffic tickets are issued on these two highways. Other busy roads in town include US-6 (Carmel Road/Main Street), US-202 (Danbury Road), NYS-121 (Peach Lake Road), and NYS-312 (Dykeman Road). On village roads traffic stops can be conducted by officers of the Brewster Police Department. Village cases are also handled separately, in the Brewster Village Court.
