Stanford is a town in Dutchess County, New York. It is located on the eastern side of the Hudson River approximately ninety miles north of New York City., the population was estimated at 4,000. The town was formed in 1793. Stanford covers roughly fifty square miles. The town consists of several hamlets. They are known as Attlebury, Bangall, Bear Market, Lenihan, McIntyre, Stanfordville, Stissing and Willow Brook. Stanford was home to the late Alfred Mosher Butts, the inventor of the word building and crossword puzzle board game, Scrabble.

The State Police tend to focus on the Taconic State Parkway and leave the local roads for the sheriffs, however this is not always the case. The state police can and will patrol the town roads as necessary.
