Sterling is a town in Cayuga County, New York. It is located on the southern shore of Lake Ontario, approximately forty miles northwest of Syracuse. The town covers a total area of forty-seven square miles, most of which is farmland. Sterling encompasses the village of Fair Haven, which is on the waterfront of Little Sodus Bay. The village is the main population area of the town. Sterling also contains the hamlets of Crocketts, Fintches Corners, Moon Beach, North Sterling, North Victory, and Sterling Valley., the total population was estimated at 3,200. The town was formed in 1812 and named after William Alexander, Lord Sterling – an American general in the Revolutionary War.

NYS-104A is the town’s main east- west bound road that leads to the village. After it meets NYS-38 in Sterling, it heads north until it leaves through the northeast corner.
