Steuben is a town in Oneida County, New York. It is located at the southern foothills of the Adirondack Mountains, around twenty miles north of Utica., had a population of approximately 1,130. Steuben makes up about forty-three square miles. The town was formed in 1792 and named after Baron von Steuben, a Prussian general who fought for the Americans in the Revolutionary War. He was buried in the town’s historical memorial site.

The road enters the town from the west as NYS-274. After passing through the Hamlet of Steuben, it heads south. From there, it becomes CR-53 as it continues east until it reaches the eastern town line. After leaving town, it connects to New York State Route 12, which runs north-south. NYS-12 falls under the town’s jurisdiction for a moment as it zig-zags over the town’s eastern boundary.
