Summerhill is a town in Cayuga County, New York. It is part of the Finger Lakes region. The town is mostly rural with various agricultural farms. The closest metropolitan area is the small city of Cortland, around ten miles east. The City of Syracuse is around forty miles north. Summerhill is also around twenty miles northeast of Ithaca., Summerhill had a population of around one thousand people. The town was formed in 1831 under the name “Plato”. In 1832 it was changed to Summerhill to avoid confusion with another location (Plato is a hamlet of East Otto, a town in Cattaraugus County). Summerhill covers a total area of twenty-six square miles and contains the hamlets of Como, Halls Corners, and Summer Hill.
