Town of Ulysses, New York
Ulysses is a town in Tompkins County, New York. It is located just northwest of the city of Ithaca. The town rests on the western shore of Cayuga Lake and is considered part of the Finger Lakes region.
For a long time, the town consisted of dairy and produce farms. In more recent years, new residents were mostly professionals from Ithaca. Ulysses is most famous for the Taughannock Falls, the highest waterfall in New York State. The waterfall is 215 feet higher than Niagara Falls.
The Town of Ulysses encompasses the Village of Trumansburg, which is found in the northwest part of town. The village is the main population area of the town and the location of most town businesses. Ulysses also includes the hamlets of DuBoise Corner, Halseyville, Jacksonville, Krum’s Corner, Perry City, Podunk, and Waterburg., the total town population was estimated at 5,000.

The Ulysses Town Court (Ulysses Justice Court) has jurisdiction over the town roads. This includes the Village of Trumansburg. Road coverage for the town is provided by the New York State Police and the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office. There is no town police force. The town’s main road is New York State Route 96 (NYS-96). It runs north-west and south-east. Taking NYS-96 southbound will bring you to the City of Ithaca. Taking it north from Ulysses will bring you to the Town of Covert. The Village of Trumansburg is located along NYS-96. It is the villages’ main road, and where most traffic stops occur. Speeding tickets are usually issued near the village boundary due to the difference in speed between the town and village.
Some other roads worth mentioning are County Route 1 (Searsburg Road), County Route 136 (Waterburg Road), County Route 142 (Perry City Road), County Route 148 (Falls Road), and New York State Route 89 (Taughannock Boulevard). County Route 1, County Route 136, and County Route 148 head towards Trumansburg. NYS-89 runs north-south along Cayuga Lake in the eastern part of town.
