It is part of New York’s Southern Tier region and rests ten miles north of the New York – Pennsylvania border., the town population was approximately 1,163. Wirt is in a very rural area of New York State. The closest large city is Buffalo, around 90 miles to the north. There are two hamlets in Wirt named West Notch and Wirt. There is also a village inside the town named Richburg. The village is split between the neighboring southern town of Bolivar.
