Benton is a rural town in Yates County, New York. It is part of the state’s Finger Lakes region. The town rests on the western bank of Seneca Lake and is located approximately fifty miles southeast of Rochester. Benton is made up of exactly 44.44 square miles. , the town had an estimated population of 2,800. The town consists of several hamlets and one village that is split between three towns. The hamlets are Angus, Bellona, Benton, and Havens Corners. The village is named Penn Yan. Most of the village is within the Town of Milo, with smaller portions located in Benton and Jerusalem.

Intersecting NYS-14A in Benton Center is County Route 14 (CR-14). CR-14 is also known as Havens Corners Road. It runs from the western town line to the eastern town line. A portion of New York State Route 14 (NYS-14) runs north-south through the northeast part of town. It runs along Seneca Lake. Taking NYS-14 southbound brings you to the Village of Dresden.
