Elmsford is a village in Westchester County, New York. It is located just west of the City of White Plains, near the entrance of the Tappan Zee Bridge. The village is considered a suburb of New York City and is approximately twenty-five miles north of Midtown Manhattan. Elmsford is one of six villages of the town of Greenburgh., the population was estimated at 5,200. The village covers only one square mile.
The area now known as the village was incorporated in 1910. Elmsford had two prior names. First it was called Storm’s Bridge, and then later, Hall’s Corners. It received its current name in 1870. The village’s early growth was attributed to the expansion of the New York and Putnam Railroad in the mid-1870s. It is said that the term “cocktail” originated in Elmsford after a local tavern ran out of wooden stirrers and used rooster tail feathers to stir their drinks.
