Traffic Tickets in Minisink

Justice courts in New York State have limited jurisdiction. They can only handle small claims, landlord-tenant disputes, misdemeanors, felony arraignments, code violations, and traffic violations. The Minisink Town Court adjudicates all the town traffic infractions excluding violations from the Village of Unionville, which has their own court. There is no town police department. Traffic patrol in Minisink is conducted by the New York State Police and the Orange County Sheriffs. They are authorized to conduct traffic stops with probable cause of a traffic violation.

New York State Route 284 and County Route 1 are the town’s arterial roads. They intersect in Westtown, which is in the center of Minisink. NYS-284 runs north-east and south-west. It also is the village of Unionville’s main road. A number of speeding tickets are issued on the NYS-284. The speed limit is reduced from 55 mph to 45 mph and then 30 mph as it enters the downtown areas of Westtown. Motorists that are not from the area are the typical victims of traffic stops. CR-1 runs north-west, heads south-east, and then turns north-east as it approaches the south town line. It then continues towards the north-east boundary and leaves town. As it turns north-east the road becomes County Route 12 (CR-12). The rest of town consists of smaller, winding, roads that lead back to one of the two larger ones.
