Mount Hope, New York
Mount Hope is a town in Orange County, New York. It is located at the eastern foothills of the Catskill Mountains, approximately seventy miles northwest of New York City. The town was first settled around 1733. In 1825, a township was formed. Mount Hope covers roughly twenty-five and a half square miles. Within the town is a Village of Otisville and the hamlets of are Finchville, Guymard, and Mount Hope., the population of Mount Hope was estimated at 6,400. A sizable amount of the town’s population consists of inmates. There are two prisons in Mount Hope. One is a federal prison named FCI Otisville. The other is named the Otisville Correctional Facility, a New York State medium-security prison.

Mount Hope primarily consists of state and county routes. Otisville consists of several large roads and a number of smaller side streets. The main roads are New York State Route 211 (State Street), County Route 11 (Highland Avenue/Mt. Hope Road), and County Route 90 (Old Mountain Road). NYS-211 heads east and west while CR-11 and CR-90 heads north and south. As NYS-211 heads east, it leaves the village and brings motorists to County Route 60 (Tally Ho Road). CR-60 is the town’s longest road that runs north-east and south-west near the eastern boundary. As it enters the southern part of town, it turns into County Route 24 (Guymard Turnpike). The remaining town area consists of small local roads.
For the most part, town roads are patrolled by officers of the Mount Hope Police Department. Traffic stops can also be conducted by Orange County Sheriffs and New York State Troopers. All town traffic infractions are adjudicated in the Mount Hope Town Court. The court handles various infractions, including stop sign violations and speeding violations. Otisville’s speed limit does not exceed 30 miles per hour. Outside of the village, the speed limit fluctuates between 40 and 55 miles per hour.
