Traffic Tickets in the Town of Ramapo

The Ramapo Town Court is one of the busiest justice courts in New York State. Besides all the town legal cases, it also handles a large volume of traffic tickets. Most traffic cases originate from the New York State Thruway (overlapping I-87 & I-287). It runs east-west in the eastern part of town and north-south in the western part of town. The speed limit fluctuates between 55 mph and 65 mph. Troopers of the New York State Police patrol the Thruway and conduct frequent traffic stops of speeding motorists. In the northeast corner of town is the Palisades Interstate Parkway. It is two lanes in each direction divided by a grassy median. On this road, the speed limit fluctuates between 50 and 55 mph. Here too a substantial number of speeding citations are issued.

Local roads are mostly patrolled by officers of the Ramapo Police Department. All traffic related charges are made returnable to the Ramapo Town Court (Ramapo Justice Court). Within the town of Ramapo, there are eleven villages, ten of which have their own justice courts. They are Airmont, Chestnut Ridge, Hillburn, Montebello, New Hempstead, New Square, Sloatsburg, Spring Valley, Suffern, and Wesley Hills. This means any violation alleged to have occurred within these ten villages are handled in the respective village court. The town court has jurisdiction over the rest of the town and the village of Kaser.

Most traffic violations have “points” that will go on your driving record if you plead guilty. Getting points on your record means your car insurance rates will increase in a substantial way. If you received a traffic ticket it does not mean that you have to get points on your license. There are ways of getting your charges reduced or dismissed, thereby avoiding the points. You do not need to appear in court, and you do not need to present a defense. For more information, you can contact the Benjamin Goldman Law Office. Our attorneys can review and discuss your options.
