Yates County is a county in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. Seneca Lake forms the eastern county line. Canandaigua Lake is on the western side of the county. In the middle of the county is Keuka Lake. The county was established in 1823 and named after Joseph Yates, New York’s governor at the time. He also signed the act establishing the county.
Yates County is one of the smallest counties in New York State, in terms of land size and population. The total size is 376 square miles. Most of the county is farmland, except for the southwestern part, which has more forestland. The Finger Lakes region is specifically known for its vineyards. Yates County contains nine towns and no cities., the county population was approximately 24,600.
